Hand and wrist pain can make everyday tasks feel harder than they should. From desk-based work and daily device use to lifting, cooking or gardening, our hands and wrists are under constant demand.
Pain may develop gradually over time or appear suddenly as acute pain after a strain or knock. Understanding both where the pain is felt and what’s causing it can help guide the most appropriate wrist and hand pain treatment.
Types of Hand Pain
Hand pain can show up in different areas depending on how the hands are used and what’s causing the strain. Common types include:
- Wrist pain
- Thumb pain
- Finger pain
- Pain in the palm of the hand
- Pain on the back of the hand.
What Can Cause Hand and Wrist Discomfort?
Hand and wrist pain is often caused by repetitive movement or overuse, especially when the hand or wrist is held in one position for long periods. Common patterns include:
- ‘Texting thumb’ from frequent phone use
- ‘Mouse wrist’ or ‘gamer wrist’ from prolonged computer or gaming activity
Other causes may include:
- Sprains and strains (hand & wrist from falls or twisting injuries)
- Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
- Muscular pain perceived as joint pain due to proximity.
Managing Hand and Wrist Pain Day to Day
Mild to moderate hand pain relief options include:
- Resting the affected hand or wrist and reducing repetitive movement
- Putting an ice pack on for short periods to help manage swelling
- Keeping your hands and wrists moving to ease stiffness
- Taking off jewellery if your hands look swollen
- Using splints, a bandage or for finger pain, taping two together for extra support.
If symptoms don’t improve after a few weeks, or if pain worsens, it’s important to speak to a GP or pharmacist for advice.
